the filename is shown in the bottom bar (black on white), but I can't even highlight it there with the mouse. |

Depends on your terminal emulator. In terminator I can hold shift to highlight text with a mouse without sending mouse events to the program. I assume most other terminal emulators have a similar feature (possibly with a different key binding). |
