Hardware Requirements

Minimum Required: Raspberry Pi 3B+

Strongly recommended: Raspberry Pi 4

Both balenaSound and LedFx alone have minimum requirements at the 3B+, and balenaSound alone still has issues on the 3B+. It's possible to run them both on a 3B+, but it has significant lag.

Note:

  • The UPNP reciever is extremely buggy. See balena/balena-sound#342. This issue can also prevent other recievers from getting audio even after you've restarted the UPNP container, and there's no error logging to go with it. This is why UPNP is disabled by default by setting SOUND_DISABLE_UPNP. Remove this environment variable to enable UPNP.
  • Typically, LedFx will run on port 8888, but this container runs on port 80. This is done to take advantage of Balena's public device URL feature, but you should keep that change in mind when connecting using a browser. You can change this behavior in the docker-compose.yml by changing the line 80:8888 to 8888:8888. I also set SOUND_SUPERVISOR_PORT from port 80 to 8080 in balena.yml. You'll probably want to remove that environment variable.
  • You can use the shirom/ledfx:frontend_beta tag to use the beta version of LedFx.
  • You need to set SOUND_SPOTIFY_USERNAME and SOUND_SPOTIFY_PASSWORD to use Spotify. By default, Spotify is disabled by setting the environment variable SOUND_DISABLE_SPOTIFY. You'll also have to remove this variable to enable Spotify. See the balenaSound docs for more details.
